In Türkiye, having a valid driver’s license is mandatory to operate any vehicle on public roads. However, there isn’t a single universal license—each type of vehicle requires a specific license class. Therefore, before applying, it’s essential to know which license class allows you to drive which type of vehicle.
How Many License Classes Are There in Türkiye?
There are a total of 17 different license classes:
A, A1, A2, M, B, B1, BE, C, C1, CE, C1E, D, D1, DE, D1E, F, and G.

Note: License classes with the letter E (e.g., BE, CE, DE) indicate authorization to drive vehicles with trailers or semi-trailers.

A Class Licenses (Motorcycles)

A1: Motorcycles up to 125 cc, 11 kW (16 years old)

A2: Motorcycles up to 35 kW (18 years old)

A: Motorcycles above 35 kW, up to 600 cc (20 or 24 years old depending on experience)

M: Mopeds, max speed 45 km/h (16 years old)
👉 Holders of an A license are also permitted to drive A1, A2, and M vehicles.
B Class License (Most Common)
The B license is the most common driver’s license in Türkiye as it covers vehicles widely used in daily life.
What Can You Drive With a B License?

Passenger cars up to 3,500 kg

Light trucks and vans under 3.5 tons

Minibuses with up to 9 passengers (under 3.5 tons)

Cars with trailers (if you also hold a BE license)

Electric and hybrid cars
Can B License Holders Drive 125 cc Motorcycles?
Yes, following an update in the Highway Traffic Regulation (Article 85), B license holders who meet specific conditions can legally drive motorcycles up to 125 cc (A1 category).
Can B License Holders Drive Light Trucks?
Yes. Light commercial vehicles and pickup trucks under 3.5 tons are permitted with a B license.
Old vs. New B Licenses
Before 2016, Türkiye issued “old B licenses.” After the 2016 update:

Separate categories were created: BE for trailers, A1/A2/A for motorcycles

Old licenses must be renewed and converted to the new system
B License Fees in 2025
To obtain or renew a B license, drivers must pay a government-set license fee (harç). The cost depends on whether it’s:

A first-time application, or
-
A renewal process.

Book an online appointment via NVİ (General Directorate of Population and Citizenship Affairs)

Pay the renewal fee

Prepare required documents: ID card, medical report, biometric photos, old license

Submit at the appointment date
New licenses are issued with international security features and comply with EU standards.
Türkiye has 17 license categories, each authorizing drivers for different vehicle types. While A group is for motorcycles, C group is for trucks, D group is for buses, the B class license remains the most common, covering passenger cars, vans, and light trucks.
