While the car rental process opens the doors to travel freedom, some technical terms in rental contracts can cause confusion. At the top of these terms is the car rental mileage limit. Although most users focus only on the daily price when renting a vehicle, understanding the mileage policy and general terms of renting is vital to avoid encountering a surprise bill at the end of the trip.
At DailyDrive, we wanted to put aside complex contract clauses and explain this situation in "driver language." Why is there a mileage limit, what do you pay if you exceed it, and in which situation should you choose which vehicle? Here are all the details.
What is Mileage Limit (KM Limit)?
Car rental companies impose a certain distance limit depending on the rental period in order to protect the second-hand value of the vehicles and prevent excessive wear and tear. This represents the maximum distance you can travel with the vehicle during the time you rent it.
The limit is usually applied in two ways:
- Daily Limit: Usually ranges between 250 km and 500 km.
- Monthly Limit: Determined between 3,000 km and 4,000 km in long-term rentals.
Important Note: The mileage limit is usually calculated cumulatively (total). For example, if you rented a vehicle with a daily limit of 400 km for 3 days, your total right is 1,200 km. Even if you drive 800 km on the first day and do not use the vehicle at all or use it very little on the other two days, you will not have any problems as long as you do not exceed 1,200 km in total.
What Happens if the Mileage Limit is Exceeded? (Excess Fee)
Your trip took longer than you planned, and the mileage limit excess in the contract occurred. What happens in this case?
The unit price to be paid per kilometer in case of exceeding the limit (e.g., 1 KM = 0.50 EUR) is specified in advance in your rental contract. When you return the vehicle, the staff checks the odometer.
The Calculation Logic is Simple:
(Returned KM - Start KM) - Total Limit Right = Exceeded KM
Exceeded KM x Unit KM Fee = Extra Payment Amount
While the mileage excess fee for economic segment vehicles is lower, the fee for luxury and premium segment vehicles may be higher.
Which Vehicle and Package Should Be Selected in Which Situation?
To make the right choice, you need to roughly calculate your route and the number of people in advance. Here are our vehicle suggestions according to your scenario:

If you are going to handle your business within the city or shuttle between close points, you may not need a high mileage limit. A sedan car rental choice, which has high maneuverability in city traffic, low fuel consumption, and will not cause parking problems, both protects your budget and offers a comfortable drive within city limits.
2. Long Road and Family Holidays (Spacious and Comfortable)
If you are going down to the Aegean coast with your family or going on a plateau tour with lots of luggage, you do not want to think about the odometer. On such long routes, an SUV car rental option, which will make your family comfortable with its wide interior volume and give confidence on the long road, is the most logical decision. When renting an SUV, definitely check the suitability of the mileage limit for your route (or the unlimited option).
